The analysis of natural and environmental context of our Country can count on very old historical records (observations on rainfall, temperature, water levels, forests, etc.), while other aspects are covered by more recent information, usually running from the second half of the last century. Official statistics made a leap in quality in this area in particular during the last decades of the 20th century, including new measurements aimed at describing the environmental effects of human activity alongside atmospheric and geological observations.

Thanks to the estimates deriving from Environmental Accounting - also developed thanks to the intervention of the European Commission in the early 1990s - it became possible to make ever more detailed records of the interaction between the general state of the environment and the overall development of productive activities.. full text
